Researchers have found three viruses in 50,000-year-old Neanderthal bones that still affect humans today. This breakthrough, led by Marcelo Briones at Brazil's Federal University of Sao Paulo provides the oldest known evidence of human viruses that can cause common colds, cold sores, and genital warts. According to the study, infectious diseases may have played a role in Neanderthal extinction.
