The first trial of transfusing lab-grown red blood cells began in the UK. At present, researchers are studying if the red blood cells made in the laboratory last longer than the blood cell made in the body. The average lifespan of a human red blood cell is about 120 days. If the lab-grown red blood cells will be able to outlast them then the patients who need regular blood transfusions won’t need the procedure so often.
