Overview
Intravenous Cannulation under the specialty of General Nursing refers to the process of inserting a cannula or a small, flexible tube into a vein to provide access for administering medications, and fluids, or collecting blood samples. The training for intravenous (IV) cannulation focuses on equipping nurses with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to safely and effectively insert an IV line. This includes understanding the anatomy and physiology of veins, choosing appropriate sites for insertion, identifying suitable cannula sizes, maintaining aseptic techniques, and minimizing complications such as infections, phlebitis, or infiltration.
